There are different types of plastics and the melting point is also different. Refer to the link below for melting point and other data. An additional problem can arise due to the fact that PLA has a rather sharply defined melting temperature (T m). This can place strict requirements on temperature control and die design in an extruder, and it may be difficult to produce an extruded member from PLA that retains its shape well during cooling (2011, WO2011116122 A1, ANDERSEN CORP.). PP and PLA are both semi-crystalline polymers with a melting point in the range of 160 °C. Despite having a similar melting point, PLA is different from PP. PLA has a high melting point similar to that of PP, and a T g above room temperature similar to that of PS. This makes PLA cutlery, rigid or glassy at room temperature.

Thermoplastic materials become liquid at their melting point (150-160 degrees Celsius in the case of PLA). PLA is a thermoplastic, meaning it will turn into a liquid in its melting point of 150 to 160 Celsius. A nifty feature of thermoplastics is that they can be heated, set upon cooling, and reheated again to form other shapes without any degradation. Being a thermoplastic there is not one melting point, but a melting zone where it gradually becomes more liquid. Pure PLA has a melting zone starting from 60°C (the "glass transition temperature") to about 155°C. The properties of PLA like melting point, mechanical strength, and crystallinity depend on the proportions of the D(+) and L(-) stereoisomers in the polymer and on the molecular weight. As for other plastics, the properties of PLA films will also depend on compounding and on the manufacturing process.

Materials with higher melting points find use in a wider variety of applications and therefore have greater industry relevancy. These high melting point materials also become increasingly hard to 3D print. Ultem, PPS, Peek, Pek and Pekk are all classic examples of high melting point (high-grade) polymers.

Materials for Application in the IKEA Decoration Range:

However, the standard temperature for printing is high at 230°C while the temperature for glass transition is at about 105°C. The glass transition temperature for a filament is the point at which it starts to go "plastic" and deform. PLA reaches this state at around 60 °C, whereas ABS is around 105°C, just suiting your specifications. To go a bit further, polycarbonate offers a glass transition temperature of around 150 °C, and Ultem at 217 °C. Since the composition of PLA is so different from other thermoplastics and the material has a lower melting point, few plants are equipped to handle it. Some recycling facilities will even discard your prints because they lack an official identification code that tells them what kind of plastic it is.

It's based on lactic acid, a naturally occurring substance that is approved as food ingredient. PLA has a relatively low melting point compared to traditional plastics and does not result in strong odors or unhealthy emissions when printing. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is of cold crystallization or melting.
